MY MESSAGE REGARDING THE $3000 VETERANS DEDUCTION

Here is a message sent to me by a resident :

I just got off the phone about the new $3000 Veteran Deduction  to find out if there is a discharge requirement of prior to 1950.   They told me there was not.   The necessary forms you outlined  in your email would be sufficient.   You might want to send out a correction to the community so there is no misinterpretation.

Thanks again for bringing this to my attention.

SENIOR FREEZE ELIGIBILITY

Okay, it’s time for another cost savings.  If your TOTAL INCOME reported on your 2016 and 2017 taxes is less than  $70,000 for each year you might be eligible for a SENIOR FREEZE on your PROPERTY TAXES.  Yes, you have to wait until you do your 2017 taxes to see if you meet this requirement.  Unfortunately, for those residents who had a TOTAL INCOME less than $70,000 in years 2015 and 2016, sorry, the filing deadline date was in October 2017.  Also, the amount that would keep you eligible is just a few thousand over the $70,000.  I forgot that number.

Now, if you did report less than the $70,000+ you can click on the following link and read all about the freeze:

http://www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/questions/ssq.shtml

The new forms will be available in March 2018, so if you feel you are eligible just call and ask for the forms. The first time, 2 forms are required.  Thereafter, only one form.

So how much will you be entitled too?  The answer is, they will freeze your property taxes and you will never have to pay any increase.  This might even be a win/win situation since the federal tax reform will not exceed $10,000 so the freeze will not add more taxes that aren’t deductible on your federal tax form.  Naturally discuss this with your accountant.  How important is this freeze.  Well, didn’t we hear that we need some new schools and some renovation of an existing school.  Whatever is added to your property taxes for these new schools, you will not have to pay.

OUR STATE AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT TAXES

If you listened to the TV or read in your newspapers about our new Income Tax Program, they always mention that NY, NJ, CA et al, will be hit the hardest in not getting as much of a break on the new tax program because our state is one of the highest in the US regarding property taxes.  As we know, we will be capped at $10,000 so after the 2017 taxes are submitted, we start losing the difference between the $10,000 and what you are paying in property taxes.

Everything I heard or read about indicates that the states with the highest property taxes MUST start lowering taxes for residents.  They have even indicated that selling a house in NJ would be more difficult since someone from out of state wouldn’t want to pay our property taxes.

Under Mayor Pucci, I met with some members of the Town Council, including our new Mayor and went over things that could be done dealing with decreasing our tax burden.  Needless to say, it was in one ear and out the other.  At that time Mayor Pucci and Chris Christie were having their “battles” and there is no question that we pay more for education because of these “battles”.  We do not receive school aid from the State that makes any sense.  There might be a “formula” but it needs a revision.

In 2018, I will begin a “crusade” in again, trying to lower our taxes and in particular trying to get more state aid for education.  Our municipal taxes are not a problem.  So I hope when I begin this “crusade” many of you will join with me.
